We have not yet used a system which meets all our needs. However, several
hardware and service providers are listed here for convenience.
Evaluations as they come in.
CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data)
Currently, Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile is offering CDPD service in the
greater Boston (out to 495) and much of New England's urban centers.
We are getting about 13K baud (best case) on large file transfers
through ftp. 500ms lag. They basically give you an IP address to
program into your CDPD modem, so your wearable really looks like an
Internet workstation. Known working (as in we've actually tried it)
in NYC, Charlotte, Seattle, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Mephis,
Philadelphia, Washington DC, and, of course, Boston. About the same
lag no matter where you go.
Some CDPD modem manufacturers
- Sierra Wireless
has the PocketPlus 110 which combines CDPD, normal analog cell
modem, and wireline modem in one box. What we use for the most
part. .6 W
- Motorola Personal Messenger 100
-
Mitsubishi voice/CDPD data phones. Another site.
- Inet's Spider
PCMCIA CDPD modem.
- Cincinnati Microwave, Inc.
sells the McDart line of modems. Good black boxes it seems.
