Abstract

The Sun is our closest star. Heliophysics (Sun-science) integrates math, physics, chemistry, and biology in a systems-science approach to studying the universe. Many opportunities exist for educators to engage learners with heliophysics resources and tools, including NASA spacecraft data and solar eclipses. This paper will present an instructional design case that adapts NASA’s Helioviewer data tool into a version for use by learners in middle and high school. After a brief description and comparison of the two versions of the Helioviewer data tool, the design of this “Student Helioviewer” tool is discussed through the multiple lenses of student learning, classroom usage, and connections to educational standards. Additional resources and technologies are highlighted to enhance the teaching and learning about the Sun.
