Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly improve K-12 education if implemented appropriately – in ways that ensure its safe and equitable use. Federal policies based on state-of-the-art research can help guide states and localities, while still leaving room for states and school districts to use AI in a way that meets their particular needs. In this policy brief, we outline the ways that the U.S. federal government can support the responsible use of AI in schools through: research on AI in K-12 education, technical standards and auditing, procurement assistance, educational guidance, and AI literacy.
