Imagine Yourself: Explorations in Fostering Personal Expression with Generative AI

Karishma Chadha

In recent years, Generative AI technology has risen in popularity and has been promoted for its creative potential. However, applications of the technology have been shown to perpetuate societal and cultural bias and harmful stereotypes. In the new age being ushered in with the advent of this technology, the Imagine Yourself project explores how we can design new tools and experiences with generative AI technology (in this case, text-to-image generation) to foster young people's creative expression of their unique identities and personal stories. The Imagine Yourself tool draws on principles of designing for belonging, and inviting young people to engage in a tinkerable and iterative process of creation.

This project was part of Karishma Chadha's Master's Thesis of the same name.

Imagine Yourself embeds an off-the-shelf image generator (OpenAI's Dall-E 3) into Scratch, using prompt transformation as a technique to explore ways to feature more diverse representation within the images output by the technology to invite young people to see themselves represented in the creative tool they're using. Additionally, the design of the tool aims to invites young people to shape their own images through iterating on the outputs of the tool. The Imagine Yourself interface allows young people to see behind the scenes of the generated images, revealing the way their original prompt was transformed by the underlying system; shaping the details of the images themselves through tinkering with generated prompt ideas or adding in their own; and editing the revealed image prompts to further iterate on the outputs.
