Ride into the Future: Discover the MIT Autonomous Bicycle Project!

NOTE: This version of the website has been specifically designed for the Museum of Science with young audiences in mind. A more detailed description of the project can be found here.

Why bikes?

Do you know how awesome it feels to ride a bike? Not only is it super fun, but it's also great for our planet! Biking helps keep the air clean and reduces pollution in cities all around the world. People are working hard to make biking even better by building bike lanes and sharing systems, like Boston's Bluebikes!

At the MIT Media Lab's City Science group, we're thinking about how to make bikes even cooler. You've probably heard of self-driving cars, right? But why can't bikes be autonomous, too?

What is the MIT Autonomous Bicycle Project?

Imagine this: you're at home, and you want to go for a bike ride. Instead of having to go find a shared bike, you just open an app on your phone and ask for one. Then, magically, the bike comes to you, all by itself! You hop on, go wherever you want, and when you're done, the bike heads off to find someone else who needs it or gets charged up for its next adventure. The City Science team has worked hard over the past few years to bring this self-sufficient bike to life!

How does it work?

- Innovative design: We faced a big challenge with this project. Ever tried balancing a bike on its two wheels? It's tough! That's why we came up with a fancy version of training wheels for our bike, with a robotic rear-wheel mechanism. When it's driving itself, it stands on three wheels. But when you're ready to ride, the two wheels join together into one, just like a regular bike.

- Autonomous mobility: The prototype you see here isn't fully self-driving yet. We're testing out the robotic wheels first. In our group, we have built other vehicles that demonstrate autonomy, such as the Persuasive Electric Vehicle (PEV) project. Want to know more about the PEV? Click here!

Why does it matter?

The MIT Autonomous Bicycle Project isn't just about cool tech—it's about making cities better. Imagine fewer cars on the road, cleaner air, and easier ways to get around. That's what we're aiming for with our research.
