In honor of World Mental Health Day, Samsung is emphasizing its collaboration with the MIT Media Lab to explore the mind-body connection, a core theme of the Lab's "Connected Mind + Body" research focus.
In recognition of World Mental Health Day, Samsung is spotlighting its work with the MIT Media Lab, aligned with the lab's Connected Mind + Body research theme. This collaboration, established in October 2023 through Samsung’s Open Innovation Initiative, taps into the expertise of the MIT Media Lab’s Fluid Interfaces group, led by Professor Pattie Maes, and the Affective Computing group, led by Professor Rosalind (Roz) Picard. Both groups focus on using advanced digital tools to explore the relationship between mental and physical health.
A significant focus of the collaboration is understanding how sleep influences well-being. The Affective Computing group, led by Picard, conducted a study with 200 students, revealing strong links between sleep patterns and well-being factors such as happiness and alertness. The research seeks to develop personalized health interventions based on individual sleep profiles, improving both mental and physical health management.
This collaboration brings together Samsung’s sensor technology with insights from the MIT Media Lab’s Fluid Interfaces and Affective Computing groups, enhancing research into the link between mental health and physical well-being, and furthering the lab’s "Connected Mind + Body" mission.
