Professor Cynthia Breazeal, head of the Personal Robots group and director of MIT RAISE, has been named a 2024 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow. She is recognized for her distinguished contributions in the field of artificial intelligence education, particularly around the use of social robots and learning at scale. Breazeal is among 471 scientists, engineers, and innovators selected for this honor.

"This year’s class of Fellows are the embodiment of scientific excellence and service to our communities,” said Sudip S. Parikh, AAAS chief executive officer and executive publisher of the Science family of journals. “At a time when the future of the scientific enterprise in the US and around the world is uncertain, their work demonstrates the value of sustained investment in science and engineering."

AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society. Beginning in 1874, fellows are elected annually by the AAAS Council. Newly elected Fellows are recognized for their extraordinary achievements at the ceremonial Fellows Forum. There, they will be presented with a certificate and a blue and gold rosette pin, which represents science and engineering, respectively.
