Urban Mining & Regenerative E-Waste Ecosystems, an exhibition led by City Science researcher Georine Pierre, has been named to the Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab's (DSL) annual “Immersive Things” list. This list celebrates groundbreaking projects at the intersection of storytelling, technology, design and code.
Pierre's innovative exhibition at the Media Lab examines the urban mining ecosystem of Old Fadama, Ghana, one of the world's largest e-waste destinations. Supported by the Council for the Arts at MIT, the installation combines immersive film, crowd-sourced data visualizations, and projection-mapped electronics to reveal the complex socio-political dynamics of global e-waste disposal. The project highlights how informal workers in Ghana have developed sophisticated circular economy systems, while addressing critical questions about electronic waste's environmental impact.
