Moving Music a presentation of two unusual premieres created at—and performed in—the MIT Media Lab as part of MIT’s Artfinity Festival.
Here...NOW by Ana Schon invites audiences to voyage through the Media Lab building, exploring the relationship between space-and-sound. MAICE by Tod Machover is an exploration of the power and limits of AI to mediate between two contrasting instruments—marimba (virtuoso Ji Hye Jung) and cello (the composer)—pulling towards extreme juxtaposition before arriving at a surprising synthesis.
These performances are free and open to the public and will run twice:
- Showing 1: 6:00-7:30pm
- Showing 2: 8:00-9:30pm
More about Here...NOW
Here...NOW operates on one place and its auditory imprint, the MIT Media Lab. It expresses the idea that the relationships we build with spaces can be transformed by music performance, and that music performance is deeply affected by the context in which it happens. This musical takeover is an experiment in making these connections aurally explicit, even to those who have never experienced the sonics of this place before. In this thirty-minute performance, a live ensemble of amplified instruments (drums, electric guitars, bass, vocals) plays original music across three rooms in the building, starting in the lobby, moving up the stairs to a conference room, and ending in the sixth floor multipurpose room.
