A variety of Media Lab community members will participate in the SIGGRAPH 2024 Conference, the premier conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques worldwide.

This year's conference features a hybrid structure with both virtual participation and on-site attendance in Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

Papers Fast Forward @ 6:00pm MT

Celebrate this year's Test of Time Award winners, which includes a paper written by the Camera Culture research group, originally presented at SIGGRAPH 2013. The paper, titled "Femto-Photography: Capturing and Visualizing the Propagation of Light," helped change the capture of light transport, enabling slow-motion videos of phenomena like reflection and scattering.

ACM SIGGRAPH Award Winners: Tamiko Thiel

Tamiko Thiel, who studied computer graphics and visual imaging in the Architecture Machine Group and Visual Language Workshop (forerunners of the Media Lab), is this year's recipient of the Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art. This award is presented annually to an artist who has created a substantial and important body of work that significantly advances aesthetic content in the field of digital art.

Keynote Presentation: Humanity Becoming Interplanetary: Exploring Space for Earth @ 9:00am MT

Media Lab director Dava Newman’s keynote presentation will cover the theme of “Humanity Becoming Interplanetary: Exploring Space for Earth." Dr. Newman will discuss a visual, interactive Earth Mission Control project designed at the Media Lab that will help take actions to regenerate Earth’s oceans, land, and atmosphere subsystems. 

Presentation: AI Comes Out of the Closet: Advocating for LGBTQIA+ Individuals in the Workplace @ 11:45am MT

Presented by Media Lab researcher Daniel Pillis, this session will highlight the crucial role of AI in bridging gaps between an individual’s professional and personal life in ways that are designed to foster inclusivity and acceptance in the workplace. They will also discuss the historical contributions of queer individuals to AI and computing, from Alan Turing to contemporary figures, emphasizing the inherent "queerness" in the field.

Presentation: ACM SIGGRAPH’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Townhall/Culture for Inclusion @ 4:45pm MT

This session will dive into the true issues and opportunities facing diversity, equity, and inclusion professionals today, and bring together ACM SIGGRAPH members from the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, including Media Lab researcher Daniel Pillis, to discuss how the organization is taking the matter seriously.
