Engaging with Space through Technology + Creativity

Experts explore new ways to connect with space through technology and creativity. Panelists will discuss democratizing space exploration, engaging young people in hands-on STEM education, and using data visualization to enhance public understanding of the cosmos. The event highlights the Lab's commitment to fostering diverse voices and innovative interdisciplinary approaches in space-related endeavors.

Moderator:

  • Kim Slater, Chief of Staff, MIT Media Lab
Kim, formerly a leader in Commercial and Civil Space Programs at Draper and NASA's Kennedy Space Center, brings her extensive experience in spaceflight systems and STEM education to the MIT Media Lab.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Cody Paige, Director, Space Exploration Initiative, MIT Media Lab
Cody leads the Media Lab’s Space Exploration Initiative, guiding innovative research from microgravity experiments to lunar missions and fostering interdisciplinary projects that combine science, technology, art, and design.
  • Alissa Chavalithumrong, PhD Student, Space Enabled research group, MIT Media Lab
Alissa focuses on Zero Robotics, a STEM outreach program that empowers middle and high school students to learn programming by commanding autonomous robots aboard the International Space Station. She engages students from diverse backgrounds in hands-on learning experiences, fostering the next generation of space explorers and innovators.
Explore Zero Robotics—an educational program that empowers middle and high
school students to code and program free-flying robots aboard the International Space Station
(ISS). The program engages students in hands-on, collaborative challenges that integrate STEM
                    learning with real-world space applications.
  • Rachel Connolly, Research Scientist, MIT Media Lab
Rachel specializes in leveraging Big Data and data visualization to enhance science education, developing new strategies to integrate digital scientific assets into STEM learning.
Explore Earth Nullschool—an interactive platform offering real-time global weather
insights with an updated map providing information on wind speed, ocean surface currents,
temperatures, anomalies, ocean waves and more.
