Sony to Assign IP Addresses to All Products

April 27, 2001 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. said that every product it manufactures for business or home use will have an assigned IP address.

Sony made the announcement at the NAB2001 exhibition held in Las Vegas, which started April 21.

The electronics company believes that in the age of the Internet over which all kinds of content is sent and received through the Internet, both sides should have IP addresses for better communications. It is likely that the company will employ IP version 6 (IPv6) to provide a nearly unlimited number of IP addresses, compared with the current IP version 4 (IPv4).
